A graphical description of this can be found here:

For those who don't want to go through that, I'll explain. A lot of people have issues meleeing a hunter mid pounce when they swing at the correct time while others seem to have little problem. The issue is with the hunter's hit box. In a pounce, the hunter's hitbox is not actually on the hunter, but about a full hunter's length ahead of it.

This means that if you want to actually hit him before he lands on you, you have to hit him a ways before he gets to you. There are other issues with the hitbox, as in it sometimes being completely desync'd from his model, but that's another story.

The other issue is trying to pounce past a downed survivor's body. The bounding box (big rectangle around the body) is where you actually register contact with another player, outside of where it actually shows you contacting them.

You would think when the survivor's down, their box would lower, but it doesn't. Add in the fact that the box for a hunter pouncing is also at full height with him in the middle and you get this.

Also notice that this has an effect to the side of the downed survivor, so you have to jump a ways to the side if you want to hit someone else.

So in essence, to get over a downed survivor and pounce someone behind them, you have to actually jump over 1.5 times their normal standing height to miss them.
