Hey. Before I REALLY celebrate this brand new PC I have, custom built from a local computer store, I already have an issue if someone can help.

No audio, on anything.

I am on an ASUS 27" full 1080p LCD monitor, model: MT276HE
The graphics card is nVidia Geforce 260 GTX PCI-e
The OS is Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I want to use HDMI, I have an HDMI cable, an HDMI port on the monitor, and a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor for the graphics card.

Is it possible to get audio through the HDMI connection even though it's connected to a graphics card?

I can even get audio with a more standard audio-only cable to supplement, not sure if I need a driver (couldn't find one and it might have not included a CD [or I lost it already]), or if it's a connection issue.

I was looking for a solution before determining that there could be a problem with the hardware, then I remembered my old friends at BBA may be able to help. :)

Thanks in advance.

I take it, it is a built in Audio?
Are the drivers up to date? (download from the motherboard website if built in, CD can be out of date.)
Have you tried using regular headset or speakers right from the standard audio out?
Checked all the setting in control panel?
If the audio has a program for it, check the settings in that too.
Check these things first before moving on to HDMI.

I forgot to say that the speakers are monitor-integrated speakers, hence the HDMI for both video and audio.

Yes, on-board audio.

I tried ASUS's website (monitor manufacturer) and only found a downloadable manual for my monitor. Didn't try the motherboard manufacturer, but I do know it's made by Gigabyte.

I turned my PC on this morning and it actually had sound this time, must have done something in background on power-up...so that answers if the monitor speakers work, and my control panel settings should be good because I went through them last night, and since the sound works now.

But one thing still, I tested and it's not getting audio from the HDMI, it's using the audio-only cable plugged into a green audio jack on the tower to get the sound. It's much better now since I have sound, but do you know how to get the HDMI to do it all?

Thanks.

You're not going to get audio out of the video card.

Good one! Missed the part about sound from video card...does not happen. (it's the small details that will get you.) My Intel board has HD with Dolby audio built in, or I can run "regular" audio out.

DVI is digital video but NO audio.
HDMI can transmit both video and audio.

If you are converting your DVI (video only) signal to HDMI (audio and video), the audio isn't present in the DVI signal so it isn't passed through to the HDMI. When you plug in the HDMI cable into the monitor, the monitor is expecting audio through HDMI, so it tells the integrated speakers to use that as its source, but there's no audio coming from the DVI port. Some GFX cards have integrated soundcards that allow for this (a recent ATI gfx card >HD3000) but this is no where near industry standard and has only started being integrated into much newer GFX cards.

Summary:
Most recent graphics cards don't have a sound controller on them, so it would be impossible for them to pass audio signal to the DVI or HDMI port on the card.

Solution:
I hear the only way to make this work is to go back to VGA connection and use a separate cable for your sound (3.5mm jack from the soundcard to the monitor).

After I said it was working, it wasn't working again the next time I powered-on. shrug

Switching from the HDMI to VGA cable like Gunclap said did the trick.
Thanks everyone.

From the 260 specifications page, under "Display Support"

http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gtx_260_us.html

it says you get HDMI-audio out via an adapter.

I also see references (in forums) to an internal cable that comes with some audio cards to connect to the graphics card or motherboard for HDMI audio out.

But, in the rather disorganized footnotes in link above, it may be saying this feature is video software dependent. Which may mean it is suitable for video-playback programs, but not for general gaming.

I get sound through my HDMI cable with my ati 4890.

The vid card has to come with sound built into it though, and I didn't check to see if yours does.

When I am watching computer stuff on my tv, I use the HDMI sound. When I'm playing on my computer I use my onboard sound with my speakers, or my USB headset(which uses it's own built in sound card)

So sometime I have to go to my control panel and disable one or two sound devices to get the sound to function with the hardware I want it to.
